‘It was luck’ – Lisandro Martinez opens up on winner against Fulham and gives special credit to Man Utd teammate
Manchester United’s match-winner Lisandro Martinez admitted he was fortunate to score the decisive goal in his team’s narrow victory over Fulham.
The Argentine broke the deadlock in a tense and uneventful clash at Craven Cottage with a long-range strike in the 78th minute that deflected off Fulham’s Sasa Lukic before finding the net. Martinez acknowledged the element of luck in his goal, as United secured just their third away win of the Premier League season.
“I think I was lucky, but it was an important win. I’m happy with the way we won the game. It doesn’t matter who scores—the most important thing is the three points,” Martinez told TNT Sports.
Martinez also praised United youngster Toby Collyer, who made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Joachim Andersen in the second half, preserving the visitors’ lead. “I am so happy because of this guy. He’s a big example for the younger generation. He works so hard every day and is so humble. It means a lot—not just for the fans but for us too because we’ve suffered a lot. This was a hard-fought win. At this club, the pressure is intense, but we embrace it. Even in games like today, we have to win and stay humble afterward,” Martinez added.
Martinez’s deflected effort was United’s only shot on target in the match but was enough to secure their eighth consecutive win at Craven Cottage, where they last lost in the 2008-09 season.
The Red Devils now turn their attention to their final Europa League group game against FCSB on Thursday, with a chance to secure automatic qualification to the last 16. They will then host Crystal Palace next Sunday in their next Premier League fixture.
