NFL: Trevor Lawrence: “QuaterBack has to play well for teams to win, I haven’t done that”
The Jaguars extended Trevor Lawrence’s contract this off season, putting him among the league’s elite quarterbacks, but his performance so far hasn’t matched the expectations.
After blowing a 10-point lead to the Dolphins in the season opener and being routed by the Browns, the Jags collapsed in a 47-10 loss to the Bills on Monday night. Lawrence threw a key interception in the second quarter, and he finished 21-of-38 for 178 yards.
Lawrence has yet to complete 60 percent of his passes in any of the first three games, and the Jaguars have now lost the last eight games he’s started—far from what was expected from the top pick in the 2021 draft.
“I’ve got to play really well for us to win,” Lawrence said via the Associated Press. “That’s the NFL. The quarterback has to play well every week to give us a chance. I don’t think I’ve done that consistently enough, so I put it on myself.”
While Lawrence’s rough rookie season was blamed on Urban Meyer’s tumultuous tenure as head coach, that excuse no longer holds, and the Jaguars need to find the root cause if they want to avoid regretting their decision to build around him.
