Chelsea’s next January transfer move progresses significantly as medical reportedly ‘completed’

Renato Veiga has reportedly completed his Juventus medical ahead of a loan move from Chelsea.

The 21-year-old defender, who signed with Chelsea from Basel last summer on a seven-year deal worth £11.8 million, has featured in 18 matches this season under Enzo Maresca, scoring twice and providing one assist. However, his Premier League appearances have been limited, with just a single start against Bournemouth in September.

Now poised for a temporary switch to Juventus, Veiga is seeking more playing time at his preferred center-back position to gain valuable experience and bolster his chances of making Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Having not featured in a Chelsea squad since the recent 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, Veiga traveled to Turin on Sunday night and arrived at the J-Medical center Monday morning. He greeted excited Juventus supporters, signing shirts before undergoing his medical examination.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Veiga has successfully passed his medical, and the move is expected to be finalized and announced shortly. The deal includes no obligation or option to buy, ensuring Veiga’s return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

Speaking about Veiga’s situation following Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City, head coach Enzo Maresca highlighted the player’s versatility:

“I said to Renato, he has already played as a center-back, full-back, holding midfielder, and attacking midfielder. One of my first press conferences, I said I really like Chelsea because many players can be versatile.

“Today, players need to learn multiple positions. If you just play one role, it’s not enough. Renato, Malo [Gusto], they’re adapting to different roles and doing well.”
