Cristiano Ronaldo poised to further break men’s international football records
Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Roberto Martinez’s Portugal squad for the October international break, where he will aim to extend two of his existing records.
Martinez selected the 39-year-old and his Al Nassr teammate Otavio in the 26-man squad for UEFA Nations League matches against Poland on October 12 and Scotland three days later. In a press conference, Martinez expressed confidence in Ronaldo and Diogo Jota as center-forward options, indicating both are likely to feature.
This gives the five-time Ballon d’Or winner another opportunity to strengthen his international football legacy, where he already holds records for the most goals and appearances in men’s football.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s international records
Ronaldo is the most-capped player in men’s international football history, with his next appearance set to be his 215th — the only man to surpass the 200-cap milestone.
His long-time rival, Lionel Messi, ranks fourth in appearances and has a considerable gap to close. Ronaldo also leads the goal-scoring charts, having netted 132 times for Portugal, well ahead of anyone else in the men’s game.
During the previous international break, Ronaldo surpassed 900 career goals, further proving he’s not done setting records at this stage of his career.
