When Will Cubarsí Be Eligible to Play for Barcelona in the Champions League Again?

Pau Cubarsí was sent off in the first half of Barcelona’s match against Benfica and will be unavailable for the return leg against the Portuguese side.

Barcelona took a crucial lead in their Champions League Round of 16 tie thanks to Raphinha’s lone goal after the hour mark and a stellar performance from goalkeeper Szczesny, who made up to eight key saves. Despite Cubarsí’s early red card, Barcelona secured a valuable result heading into the second leg.

The incident occurred in the 22nd minute when Pavlidis made a run behind Barcelona’s defense. In an attempt to stop his shot, Cubarsí slid in and ended up bringing down the Greek forward. Referee Felix Zwayer immediately showed him a red card, a decision that was upheld by VAR.

The situation was reminiscent of Ronald Araujo’s red card against PSG last season, and Cubarsí tried to argue his case with the referee, but to no avail. This marked his first red card in 65 appearances for Barcelona.

Given that the foul occurred while the ball was in play and without excessive force, UEFA is expected to impose a one-match suspension on Cubarsí. This means that if Barcelona maintains their advantage in the return leg, Cubarsí could return for the potential quarter-final clash against either Lille or Borussia Dortmund.

Hansi Flick commented after the match, “These things happen in a match. The important thing is how you react, and the reaction has been very good.” Now, however, Barcelona will need to find a reliable replacement for Cubarsí. Eric García is the most similar in terms of playing style, but it seems likely that, as in this match, Araujo will step in for him.
