Nigerian and Ugandan clubs pay tribute to Abubakar Lawal after tragic accident.
Former Wikki Tourists and Nasarawa United player, as well as former junior international Abubakar Lawal, has passed away at the age of 29 following a fatal motorcycle accident in Uganda on Monday.
Reports from Uganda confirm that Lawal, who played for Vipers SC, lost his life in an accident on Entebbe Road in Kampala, the country’s capital.
Vipers SC expressed their sorrow in an official statement:
“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning (Monday). His body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Tributes have poured in from across the football community, including his former club in Nigeria. NPFL side Nasarawa United wrote:
“We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest.”
Ugandan club UPDF FC also paid their respects:
“The entire UPDF FC family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Vipers SC forward Abubakar Lawal, who passed away in a motorbike accident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Vipers SC, the family of the deceased, and the entire football fraternity.”
Lawal’s career saw him move from Wikki Tourists to Nasarawa United in 2019 before joining AS Kigali in Rwanda in 2020. After two years in Rwanda, he made the switch to Uganda, where he played for Vipers SC.
