Ten Hag shares his thoughts on intense Porto draw
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag experienced a rollercoaster of emotions on Thursday evening as his team let a two-goal advantage slip against FC Porto, only to salvage a point in the final moments.
United’s front trio of Amad, Rasmus Hojlund, and Marcus Rashford helped secure a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes. However, Porto fought back to level the score by halftime.
A third goal from Porto and a second yellow card for Bruno Fernandes appeared to seal United’s fate for a second defeat in five days, but Harry Maguire’s late header in stoppage time rescued a valuable point.
The match was action-packed, with numerous goals, cards, and strong individual performances. After the game, Erik ten Hag spoke to TNT Sports, reflecting on the performance.
OUR DEFENDING FELL SHORT
“We started very well, dominated, and scored two good goals, but then we lost control. The start was strong, the middle was poor, and we finished well. It’s a tough venue, so to come back and equalize at 3-3 shows good spirit. The team’s character is strong, but our defending needs to improve.”
WHY WE LOST CONTROL
“First, we needed to be better in possession. Like in the beginning, we should have kept switching to our free players. We had a good plan, and if we stuck to it, we could have scored more.”
WE CREATED ENOUGH TO WIN
“Not long ago, we kept three clean sheets, so we know how to defend. We need to get back to those habits. Scoring three times away in Europe should be enough to win.”
WHY I SUBBED RASHFORD
“We have to rotate. Garnacho didn’t start, even though he had a great game, and we need players fresh for Sunday’s match against Villa. They have more rest, so we need to keep players fit.”
JUDGE US AT SEASON’S END
“We are in a process. Don’t judge us now; judge us at the season’s end. We’ve reached finals in two seasons, and we’ll continue to develop.”
THE TEAM AND STAFF ARE UNITED
“We will keep working, fighting, and improving. There’s a strong bond between the staff and players. The mentality is there, but we need to step up defensively.”
