Geovany Quenda has turned down a move to Manchester United in favor of joining Chelsea, and the reason behind his decision has now been revealed.
The 17-year-old winger has enjoyed a breakout season at Sporting, playing a key role in the club’s success. His performances have attracted interest from several top clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea. United believed they had an edge, given that Quenda had worked with coach Ruben Amorim earlier this season at Sporting.
However, Quenda opted for Chelsea, with former player Hulk now revealing that the winger preferred Enzo Maresca’s tactical setup to Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation. Quenda felt that under United’s system, he would likely be deployed as a wing-back, whereas he wanted to play higher up the pitch as a traditional winger.
The report also suggests that Amorim could face another dilemma this summer, as Quenda’s move to Chelsea might impact the club’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho. If Chelsea finalizes Quenda’s acquisition, it could influence United’s decision not to make Sancho’s loan deal permanent, leaving them with another unwanted player.
Although Quenda has agreed to move to Stamford Bridge, he will remain at Sporting CP until the summer of 2026.
