Paul Pogba’s doping ban reduced following appeal
Since Paul Pogba’s return to Juventus in 2022, following his ill-fated world-record move to Manchester United six years earlier, his time on the pitch has been far from smooth.
Knee surgery, along with abdominal and hamstring injuries, limited the French midfielder to just six Serie A appearances during the 2022/23 season, which was a difficult year for Juventus overall. At the start of last season, Pogba tested positive for a banned substance, leading to a four-year suspension from football. Given Pogba’s age, this lengthy ban raised concerns that his elite career might be over. However, after a successful appeal, his suspension has been shortened.
This means Pogba could return to action as early as March 2025.
Paul Pogba’s Doping Ban Reduced on Appeal
On February 29, 2024, Pogba received a four-year ban after testing positive for elevated testosterone levels during a random drug test following Juventus’ match against Udinese in August. The test was conducted by Italy’s National Anti-Doping Tribunal (NADO), leading to Pogba’s provisional suspension. He was given three days to provide an explanation and submit any counter-evidence.
In response, Pogba expressed his intent to appeal, stating he believed the ruling was incorrect. He voiced his sadness and shock, saying, “I am heartbroken that everything I’ve worked for in my career has been taken from me. I’ve never knowingly taken any banned supplements.”
Pogba took his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and, as reported on October 4, successfully had his ban reduced.
What is Testosterone and Why is it Banned?
Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone in humans, but high levels can enhance an athlete’s endurance. Testosterone-related doping violations typically involve either synthetic testosterone use or supplements boosting its levels. If a test shows higher-than-normal testosterone, it may indicate a violation, prompting investigations and appeals, like Pogba’s case.
What Has Paul Pogba Said?
Pogba has not yet commented on his reduced ban but has consistently maintained his innocence. His agent, Rafaela Pimenta, expressed confidence that Pogba never intended to break any rules, stating in September 2023, “We are waiting for the counter-analysis; we can’t form an opinion without the results.”
Following his four-year ban, Pogba said, “I believe the decision is wrong. I am devastated, but I have never knowingly or deliberately taken any banned substances. I have always respected the integrity of the sport and would never cheat fellow athletes or supporters.”
