Nigeria to Compete in Four Events at 2025 World Athletics Relays in China
Nigeria is set to participate in four out of the six events scheduled for the 2025 World Athletics Relays, which will take place in Guangzhou, China, from May 10 to 11.
The Nigerian team will compete in the men’s 4x100m relay, women’s 4x100m relay, mixed 4x100m relay, and mixed 4x400m relay.
According to Israel Inwang Mfon, Secretary of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the selection of these four events was based on the country’s areas of comparative strength and potential for medal success.
It’s worth noting that for the 2024 edition of the World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas, all non-Olympic events were dropped. Previously, the competition included races like the 4x800m, 4x1500m, 4x200m, distance medley relay, shuttle hurdles relay, and 2x2x400m relay.
With only Olympic events retained—namely the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, along with their mixed-gender formats—the 2025 edition in Guangzhou will feature a total of six events. While the Nassau 2024 meet included five events, the introduction of the mixed 4x100m relay in Guangzhou brings the total to six.
