Man Utd Clinch Europa League Semifinal Spot with Last-Minute Maguire Winner Against Lyon.
Manchester United booked their place in the Europa League semifinals with a dramatic 121st-minute winner from Harry Maguire, sealing a thrilling 7-6 aggregate victory over Olympique Lyonnais at Old Trafford.
In an electric quarterfinal second leg, United appeared in control after first-half goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot gave them a 2-0 lead on the night. But Lyon roared back with second-half strikes from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico, leveling the tie and silencing the home crowd.
The match took another twist when Tolisso was sent off late in regulation, giving United a man advantage heading into extra time. Even so, Lyon struck first in the added period through Rayan Cherki’s curling effort, followed by Alexandre Lacazette’s cool penalty — pushing the visitors tantalizingly close to a semifinal spot.
However, Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty of his own to keep United alive, setting the stage for a frantic finish. With seconds left on the clock, Maguire rose highest to head home from a corner, sending Old Trafford into raptures and clinching a 5-4 win on the night — and 7-6 on aggregate.
United will now face Athletic Bilbao in the semifinals as they continue their pursuit of European silverware.
