Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes shared that he received a message from Alan Shearer ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.
The Magpies made history on Sunday by defeating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley, ending their 70-year trophy drought. Dan Burn scored the opening goal just before halftime, and Alexander Isak added the winning goal in the 52nd minute. Federico Chiesa pulled one back for Liverpool late in the match.
Guimaraes, who took over as captain at the start of the 2024/25 season, expressed his joy at being part of such a historic moment for the club. He revealed that Shearer, a legend of the club, had sent him a message before the final, and the emotional moment left him feeling incredibly proud.
Speaking to reporters after the win, Guimaraes said: “This is all for the fans. They deserve everything. When I arrived, I said I wanted to make history, and now we can say we’re champions again. I have no words—this is the best day of my life. For the fans, it’s like a World Cup. Many have grown up without seeing us as champions. It’s my first year as captain, and this is one of the best days ever. It’s unbelievable.”
He continued: “This feels like my second home. We’re making history. One day, when I leave, I hope the fans will sing my name like they do for [former captain Alan] Shearer. He sent me a message before the game. I’m so emotional today.”
The historic victory sees Newcastle return to Premier League action on April 2, when they face Brentford at home after the international break.
