Vinicius Jr ‘TURNS DOWN contract offer’ from Real Madrid as extension negotiations begin amid Saudi Pro League interest

Vinicius Jr is reportedly seeking a salary increase to reflect his standing as one of the world’s top footballers. The Brazilian forward has turned down Real Madrid’s initial contract offer following the opening of extension talks between the two parties.

Currently under a deal signed in 2022 that runs until 2027 — with a remarkable €1 billion (£830 million) release clause — the 24-year-old is a key figure for Los Blancos. Despite securing his services for several more years, Real Madrid is eager to tie him to a new long-term contract amid past transfer speculation.

According to The Athletic, Vinicius Jr’s representatives rejected Real’s first proposal, with the player reportedly seeking a pay rise beyond his current £12.5 million annual net salary. His wages are said to be comparable to teammate Kylian Mbappe, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain last year.

However, his future in Madrid remains uncertain, with the Saudi Pro League expressing ongoing interest. Saudi representatives reportedly re-engaged with Vinicius Jr’s camp in December after initial talks during the summer. A move to the Middle East could make him the world’s most expensive player, potentially pressuring Real Madrid to offer a more lucrative deal.

In a bid to reach an agreement, Real Madrid requested a meeting with Vinicius Jr’s family and representatives in mid-January. The club hopes to secure his long-term future following his impressive contributions since joining from Flamengo in 2018 for £37.5 million.

During his time in Madrid, Vinicius Jr has made 293 appearances, scoring 101 goals and providing 83 assists. He has won two La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies, and two FIFA Club World Cups. In 2024, he was named FIFA’s Best Men’s Player but missed out on the Ballon d’Or, which was awarded to Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
