CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba Battle Back to Hold Zamalek to 2-2 Draw

Enyimba of Nigeria mounted an impressive comeback from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against defending CAF Confederation Cup champions Zamalek of Egypt in a Group D encounter on Sunday.

The Cairo-based side dominated the first half of the match in Uyo, taking a commanding lead with goals from Tunisian forward Seifeddine Jaziri and Omar Faraj by the 40th minute.

However, Enyimba responded just before the break, with Ifeanyi Ihemekwele cleverly lobbing the ball over goalkeeper Mohamed Awad to reduce the deficit.

The hosts carried their momentum into the second half, piling pressure on the two-time Confederation Cup winners. Their persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Chinedu Ufere’s deflected shot found the back of the net to level the score. Despite creating several chances in the closing stages, Enyimba’s finishing let them down.

Among the spectators was Enyimba chairman Nwankwo Kanu, the legendary former Ajax, Inter Milan, and Arsenal player, and twice crowned African Footballer of the Year in 1996 and 1999.

Zamalek had started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Black Bulls of Mozambique, while Enyimba suffered a 2-0 defeat to Al Masry of Egypt. Later on Sunday, Black Bulls were set to host Al Masry in Maputo.
